OPTIONS
Options are projects with given guidelines for completion, each worth a given amount of points possible to be earned. They offer a variety of content areas and formats that address a diversity of learning styles, levels, interests, and abilities. These options can include: art pieces, creative writing, research projects, brochure creation, website design, environmental immersion, garden design and creation, debates, and much more!

Option 1: 2010 Fairchild Challenge T-shirt Designs (For individuals)

Design a unisex, one-color image with a compelling environmental message that represents the mission of the Fairchild Challenge 2010, to be printed on the back of a T-shirt.

Design must be presented on 8½” x 11” white, unlined paper.

Original, hand-rendered or computer-generated are accepted. Note: If selected, students may be asked to provide computer-generated designs electronically.

Design must include the words “Fairchild Challenge 2010.”

On a separate sheet, in one paragraph, explain the relevance of your design to the Fairchild Challenge.

The winning design will be printed on T-shirts and given to Fairchild Challenge participants at each participating school in Lake County.

Designs will be judged on artistry, creativity, technical ability, appeal to peers, feasibility of printing on a T-shirt and explanation of design’s relevance to theme.

School submits: Option 1 entry form; up to four designs, with a one-paragraph explanation for each design.

Due at Cherry Lake Tree Farm: Friday, November 20, 2009 by 4 pm

Maximum possible points: 200 (50 per design)
Option 2: Research Poster: "Alternative Energy" (For individuals or groups)
- Produce a stand-alone poster on the theme “Alternative Energy.” Posters must be presented on a 36” x 48” tri-fold display board.
- Posters may cover several different forms of alternative energy or may provide extensive research on one form of alternative energy.
- Posters must indicate whether or not the energy source(s) is used in Central Florida, and if not, how it may be implemented within the region.
- Present your project through illustrations and words.
- Reference at least three sources (books, journals, magazines and/or other reliable literary sources published online or in print); not all sources can be from the Internet.
- Sources must be cited in MLA (Modern Language Association) style and listed on a separate page, included with the tri-fold board.
- All written components must be in the students’ own words and must contain facts based on academic research. Students may express their personal opinions. Plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification.
- Posters will be judged on: thoroughness of research, accuracy of information, relevance to theme, clarity of presentation, visual appeal and research references.
- School submits: Option 2 entry form; up to three posters, with a list of resources for each poster
- Due at Cherry Lake Tree Farm: Friday, December 11, 2009 by 4 pm
- Maximum possible points: 300 (100 per poster)
Option 3: Global Competition: "Footprints" CD Cover Design (For individuals)

- Read the lyrics of the song, “Footprints” by London-based independent band, Storey. Lyrics are available for download at the following website: www.cherrylake.com/challenge/resources.html
- Consider the lyrics and research the topic of “footprints,” from an environmental/ecological perspective.
- On 8 ½” x 11” white, unlined paper, create a 5” x 5” color design for the front cover of the soon-to-be released “Footprints” CD single. The design should convey a clear message related to the theme of an ecological footprint and should reflect the lyrics of the song.
- Entries should reflect the mission of The Fairchild Challenge and BGCI: www.cherrylake.com/challenge/resources.html
- Original, hand-rendered or computer-generated work is acceptable. Note: If selected, students may be asked to provide computer-generated designs in electronic format.
- On a separate 8 ½” x 11” sheet of paper, provide a typed or neatly-handwritten paragraph of no more than 100 words explaining how individuals can reduce their footprint.
- NOTE: The winner of this Fairchild Challenge option will be entered into a larger international competition, the 2009-2010 Fairchild Challenge/BGCI Global Option. The winning entry of the international competition will be printed on the cover of the “Footprints” CD single.
- Designs will be judged on artistry, originality, creativity, technical ability, appeal, and relevance to theme.
- School submits: Option entry form; up to four CD cover designs, with a one-paragraph narrative for each design.
- Due at Cherry Lake Tree Farm: Wednesday, December 16, 2009
- Maximum possible points: 200 (50/design)
Option 4: Photojournalism: "People and Plants" (For individuals )
- Produce an original 5” x 7” photo (color, or black and white) on the theme of “People, plants and their interactions.”
- On a separate sheet of paper, provide a title for your photo and a 100 to 200-word, typed or neatly handwritten narrative based on the photo.
- Film or digital photo prints are accepted.
- Photos must be neither matted nor mounted.
- Entries will be judged on: concept, relevance to theme, impact of image and narrative, artistry, creativity, technical ability, and relevance of narrative to photo.
- School submits: Option 4 entry form; up to four photos, with a title and narrative for each photo
- Due at Cherry Lake Tree Farm: Friday, February 26, 2010 by 4 pm
- Maximum possible points: 200 (50 per photo)
Option 5: Opinion Paper Based on Research (For individuals)
A. What is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Cap and Trade system, and what is the current President’s position on this policy? Do you think this is an effective policy for reducing pollution in the United States and around the world?
B. What components are required for a “green building” to be LEED-certified? Do you think LEED certification is the answer to sustainable development?
C. On July 14, 2009, Florida state put in place the first ever “Standard of Identity” for honey. What is the standard, and why was it created? How do you think this new regulation could affect the local and global trade of honey?
D. What is the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan? How do you think it will affect Florida residents and more specifically, Lake County Residents?
- Select one opinion paper topic from the list provided.
- Complete a 1,500-word paper, typed, double-spaced, using 12-point font.
- Papers must be written in the students’ own words. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.
- Papers must contain facts based on research and include students’ own supporting opinions.
- Quote from or make reference to at least five sources that support your statements, not all should be from the Internet. Be sure to provide in-text citations, whenever appropriate.
- Papers should include a title page and a bibliography. For in-text citations and bibliographic references, use MLA (Modern Language Association) style.
- Papers will be judged on: evidence of research, sources, knowledge of subject, clarity of writing, expression of and support for point of view, effective introduction and conclusion, and originality.
- School submits: Option 5 entry form; up to four papers, one per topic
- Due at Cherry Lake Tree Farm: Friday, April 16, 2010 by 4 pm
- Maximum possible points: 400 (100 per paper)
Option 6: Testimonial: Environmental Lifestyle Change (For individuals)
- Submit a 550-word statement (typed, double-spaced, using 12-point font) outlining two specific efforts and/or lifestyle changes that you and at least one family member, relative or friend have made to support conservation, minimize pollution and/or promote environmentally-friendly causes.
- Additionally, provide documentation to substantiate your efforts (photos, utility bills, graphs of data, etc.).
- Testimonials will be judged on: relevance and impact of actions taken, commitment to the actions, clarity of writing and creativity.
- School submits: Option 5 entry form; up to four testimonials
- Due at Cherry Lake Tree Farm: Friday, April 23, 2010 by 4 pm
- Maximum possible points: 200 (50 per testimonial)
